Online Master's in Cybersecurity Degree Programs in Virginia

Virginia is home to 16 schools that have a total of 22 online master’s programs in cybersecurity. George Mason University, James Madison University, Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, The University of Virginia (UVA), Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) are all public schools that offer online master’s degrees in cybersecurity, giving students the option to study fields such as applied information technology, computer science, cybersecurity management, information systems, AI for cybersecurity, cyber conflict and cyber crime, and more. There are also several private institutions of higher education in Virginia that have online master’s in cybersecurity programs, including American National University, ECPI University, Hampton University, Liberty University, Marymount University, Regent University, Strayer University, University of the Potomac Virginia Campus, and Washington University of Science and Technology. Through these schools, students can study areas such as cybercrime management, cybercrime investigation, cyber operations, cybersecurity policy, computer forensic management, cybersecurity and data science, cybersecurity law, and other related fields.

While most of the schools are regionally accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), Strayer University are University of the Potomac Virginia Campus have earned regional accreditation through the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Furthermore, American National University has obtained accreditation through the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC), while Washington University of Science and Technology earned accreditation through the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC).

In addition to regional or institutional accreditation, several of the schools in Virginia offering online master’s in cybersecurity programs have obtained optional designations through the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C) program. NCAE-C is a federal program that assesses curricula and learning outcomes for college-level cybersecurity programs, providing designations in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD), Cyber Research (CAE-R), and/or Cyber Operations (CAE-CO) to schools with cybersecurity programs that meet their criteria. NCAE-C is jointly managed by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).
